D'ARGENTHAL FRANCE

Cameo glass vase with red and blue/greenish etched setting of flowers. Design: Paul Nicolas, Lavalsous-Bruyéres. More pictures.

After his study in Nancy, Paul Nicolas continued his education at the decoration studio of the crystal manufacturer Saint-Louis. In 1893, Emile Gallé asked Nicolas, on his 18tht birthday to come work for him. When Emile Gallé died in 1904, he continued to work for the Gallé company which was now led by the widow of Emile. She also saw his talent and let him participate at the exhibition of 1908 in Strasbourg. As from that moment he started to create objects under his own name. Objects which show florale landscapes carried out by means of acids in the style of Gallé and the school of Nancy.
After 1918 he worked a short time with Saint - Louis for realising a series of vases with the typical Art Nouveau and Nancy school characteristics. These objects have been signed in their decoration with d'Argenthal. Cameo glass of d'Argenthal is very similar to the school of Nancy and is ranged at the top of glass art.
